Located in Bakersfield, California St. John Sporting Dogs breeds and shows Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. St. John Sporting Dogs excel in the field and show ring. Confirmation is important to ensure the health and quality of the dogs. All of our dogs come with health screenings to ensure that your investment will last as long as possible. St. John Sporting Dogs gets its name from the breed used to establish all retrievers. The now extinct St. John Water Dogs (aka Lesser Newfoundland) is the base for all five of the retriever breeds. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers can trace their lineage back to two St. John Water Dogs that were shipwrecked off the coast of Maryland. Canton and Sailor were used to breed with the dogs located in the Chesapeake Bay area to retrieve ducks. The result was a thick, oily, double coated dog that could hunt all day in frigid water. We have named our kennel after the now extinct St. John Water Dog that was so vital to all of the retriever breeds.
